# Product drops and presales: one link in bio code you repoint, not a new link every time

> Run a product drop or presale from Instagram with one code. Point it at the teaser, the checkout, the sold-out note and the restock. Old posts still work.

A drop is a timing problem. The teaser goes out Monday, the presale opens Friday, it sells out Saturday, and the restock is in three weeks. Each stage has a different URL, and every post you made along the way points at the wrong one.

Give the drop one word and change what the word opens.

## The sequence

| Day | What you say | What `friday` opens |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | "Code friday, link in bio" | A block: photos, price, "opens Friday 7pm", a **Message on WhatsApp** button for questions |
| Friday | Same | Redirect to the checkout page |
| Saturday | Same | A block: "Sold out. 40 restocking in three weeks", a link to the waitlist |
| Restock | Same | Redirect to the checkout page again |

Every Reel and caption from Monday still says `friday`, and so does any story you saved to a Highlight; every one of them still works. Stories themselves [disappear after 24 hours](https://help.instagram.com/1729008150678239/) unless you add them to a Highlight. On drop day you change one code in the editor, not every post that mentions the drop.

## Set up

1. [inkink.in](https://inkink.in), continue with Google, claim your username.
2. **New code**, code `friday`, title "Autumn drop". Pick **Block** and add photos and the date.
3. Bio link: `inkink.in/@you`.
4. On the day, open the code, switch the type to **Redirect** and paste the checkout URL. Save.

A block holds a title, up to 2,000 characters of plain text, up to five images or links, and action buttons: one on the free plan, up to three on Pro. Change it as often as you like. The code itself never changes, so nothing you posted goes stale.

## What buyers see on drop day

A redirect does not jump straight to the checkout. The visitor sees the code's title, and a preview image when the destination has one, for 5 seconds, with an "Opening in 5" countdown and a **Stay here** button. Then the checkout opens in the same tab. Use the title to say what is about to open, for example "Autumn drop: checkout".

*What a redirect code shows before it opens the destination. Example from a demo page.*

When the drop sells out, switch the type back to **Block** and write the sold-out note. Buyers who tap the sticker in a story Highlight, or type the code from an old Reel or caption, now read the note instead of a sold-out checkout.

## Direct links for stories

The link sticker takes `inkink.in/@you?code=friday`. It opens whatever `friday` points at right now, so a Monday story you saved to a Highlight opens the checkout on Friday.

## What you learn

The code counts opens across the whole run. Changing what it points at does not reset the count, so you get one number for the drop, from teaser to restock, and you can compare it with the next drop's code. Every resolve counts, including a reload of a `?code=` link, so read it as opens, not people.

*The Codes tab on a demo page. Each card shows its own open count; the numbers are example data.*

## Keep the old code

Do not rename `friday` to `friday2` for the next one. Changing a code breaks every post that carried it, and the editor warns you when you change it: the old code "is already out in your posts". Use `nov` for the next drop and leave `friday` pointing at the shop.

## Compared with Linktree and editing your posts

| | Where the drop link lives | Counting on the free plan | Which post sent the visitor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edit posts by hand | In your bio, and named in each caption, so a new stage means new edits | Instagram counts [link taps per story](https://help.instagram.com/383939598845756/), but no single number covers the drop | Not covered here |
| Linktree | A row on your Linktree page, with [unlimited links on the free plan](https://linktr.ee/s/pricing) | [Lifetime totals for the whole page and a 28-day date range](https://linktr.ee/help/en/articles/5434178-understanding-your-insights); the "Most Clicked" ranking and traffic sources need Pro or Premium | [Its Insights help page describes no way to see it](https://linktr.ee/help/en/articles/5434178-understanding-your-insights) |
| inkink | Behind the code `friday` | An open count per code, kept as long as the code exists | Not shown either |

Linktree is a good fit if you want one long list of links: the free plan has no cap on them. Its paid plans widen the [date range](https://linktr.ee/help/en/articles/5434178-understanding-your-insights): Starter 90 days, Pro 365 days and Premium the full lifetime, and Pro and Premium add the per-link ranking. Editing posts needs no new tool at all, and for one drop with two posts that may be enough.

The difference for a drop is what lives in the post. With a list, the post says "link in bio" and the buyer looks for the right row. With a code, the post says `friday`, and the word opens the current stage. inkink does not tell you which post a visitor came from, and Linktree's Insights help page describes no way to. A code used only for the drop gets close: its count is the drop's count.

## FAQ

**Can I pre-announce the code before anything is ready?**
Yes. Create the block with "Coming Friday" and a photo. Codes save live, so the code works the moment you save it.

**Can people find the drop without the code?**
If **Show in the browse list** is on, it is in the list on your page, and anyone can find it from the inkink home by switching the box to `##` and typing `friday`. In the list, a redirect can show its preview image. A new block shows a blank thumbnail, but a code that was a redirect keeps that image after you switch it to a block. Turn the switch off for a private presale: the code still works when typed but does not appear in the list or in `##` search.

**Does inkink take payment?**
No. The code opens your checkout, your form, or a WhatsApp chat. Money moves where it already moves today.

**Does Linktree show how many people clicked my drop link?**
On the free plan, [Linktree shows lifetime totals for your whole page and a date range of the last 28 days](https://linktr.ee/help/en/articles/5434178-understanding-your-insights), and the "Most Clicked" per-link ranking is on Pro and Premium only.
